Tom Hanson is a national investigative correspondent for CBS News and Stations. He is a member of CBS News and Stations Medical, Health, and Wellness Unit. Lauren Andrews says she was almost like a secondary parent to Sandra Birchmore, who wasallegedly killed by then-police officer Matthew Farwell, and that Birchmore had a difficult upbringing. Andrews told CBS News she spoke with Birchmore just two weeks before her death in February 2021 and never believed the medical examiner's initial conclusion that Birchmore died by suicide. Andrews said Birchmore shared with her that she was pregnant, and saw no signs Birchmore would hurt herself when she was at her house for the last time. Farwell, who was a police officer in Stoughton, Massachusetts, is now on trial for killing Birchmore and her unborn baby. "It was complete, 100% exploitation is what it was," Andrews told CBS News. Federal prosecutors said Farwell met Birchmore when she was 13 years old and a member of the police department's youth program.
